Perfect Scoundrels

Perfect Scoundrels by Ally Carter

PerfectScoundrelsFINAL

The Skinny: The matriarch of the Hale family, Hale’s grandmother, suddenly passes away, leaving the entire Hale company to the youngest Hale, W.W. Hale III – i.e. Kat Bishop’s now boyfriend. But when she discovers that Hale’s grandmother’s will might have been a fake and Hale is now the victim on a con, she must find the real will and, hopefully, save Hale and his company.

BFF?: My love for Kat has only grown. Like, seriously, I cannot say anything more about her that I haven’t already said. But I’ll try. While she’s still the coolest, I think we get to see another side of her in this one. She’s not just Kat, girl con artist. She’s suddenly Kat, Hale’s girlfriend. I mean, she’s still a con artist, but you get what I’m saying. We get to see her struggle with being in this relationship with Hale and still trying to pull off this con. It’s a tricky balance and she doesn’t handle it all that well… which I kind of like. We also get to see her interact a ton with her family, to the point where she has risen from a little girl among the big dogs to one of the big dogs herself. It’s a different side of Kat, one that I really loved seeing!

Readability: Like the other books in this series this one read like a good heist book or movie should. Lots of twists, unanswered questions, odd happenings… really love these books and how fun they read!

Crush Level: 8
I really really really wanted my crush level for Hale to go up. And I mean, it didn’t diminish in any way. I still love him to pieces. But this book was much more Hale centric and with him going through so much, I kind of found myself not liking him at moments. I wanted to tell him, hey! don’t be a jerk. That being said, he was still just as swoony as he’s always been. I don’t know if I like BGFF Hale or Boyfriend Hale better… but either way… he’s yummy!

Bonus Points:
Hale’s Background
Professional-Background-Check1
I guess we were given hints at Hale Industries and Hale’s family’s insane wealth in the earlier books, but Perfect Scoundrels really gives us a deeper look at not only Hale but his family, his background, and what makes him who he is. It was really sweet and challenging to get to know him, definitely making him a much more rounded character.

Commencement Speech: It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of this series, so when I found out there would be a third book in this series, I may have done a happy dance and then proceeded to wait on pins and needles for it to come out. In fact, I’m pretty sure I was the first one to check this book out at our library. I wasn’t really disappointed with this one so much as I wasn’t as in love with it like I was the others. It was super good, but I felt like it lacked the special spark the others in this series has had. Maybe because it was much more serious in tone. Hale, who so often brought lightness and sweetness to situations, was suddenly thrust into this situation where he had to be responsible and mature, two things that really took away from his personality. I thoroughly enjoyed, however, how this book seemed to grow up with the characters, evolving from cutesy crime book to thoughtful and deep… with lovely hints of fun and crime!

Yearbook Quote: “If you don’t want to be a victim, don’t act like one.”

Superlatives – Most likely to make you glad you’re not a Hale

  1. I love this series and really need to add this one to my summer reading list. Glad that Hale is a focus, even though the tone is a little darker. And yay for seeing a new side of Kat! Fab review, Candice!

  2. I really liked learning more about Hale and his background (we found out what his nickname is, but will we ever find out what the W.W. stands for?!), but I agree, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I did the first two. Great review! 🙂

  3. I’ve only read the first one in this series. I can’t decide if I want to continue in the series. I mean, I liked the first one, but I wasn’t in love with it. Although, I do want to know more about Hale. Sad we don’t get to know what his first name is, though 😦
