This Top Ten Tuesday is the Top Ten Books That Broke Your Heart A Little.

This year The Broke and Bookish decided to go anti-Valentine’s and yeah… I’ve been there myself. I’m not sure if I want to go back… but here goes!

Books have a special way of affecting us like nothing else. Sure, movies can be heartbreaking, but after you leave the theater or turn your TV off, you’re usually done. Books, on the other hand, leave you shattered into tiny pieces and you can spend the rest of the day sitting in your recliner and staring off into space wondering just how you’re going to put yourself back together.

It might seem a little painful to talk about, but here are the top ten books that broke my heart a little:

Princess Diaries: Princess on the Brink

Whose heart DIDN’T break a little bit when Mia and Michael broke up? Here I was, following tra la la along with Mia and Michael and then bam! They break up. I’m not gonna lie, my heart was just as shattered as Mia’s, despite me wanting to slap her for dumping Michael and her ridiculous “virginity is so precious” nonsense. (I do not condone losing one’s virginity, her opinion of it was just ridiculous)

The Sky is Everywhere

This didn’t really break my heart a little. It ripped it out of my chest and tossed it onto a hockey rink and let them use it as a puck. Okay. That was weird. But seriously, this book broke my heart and healed it and then broke it again.

Mockingjay

While the end slightly healed my heart, this book pulled a Harry Potter and killed like everyone, thus breaking it. Which leads me to my next book…

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

That scene where Harry is going to die and his parents come back and he asks if it’s going to hurt. That scene. THAT SCENE. Heartbreaking.

Delirium

Now, we all know what happened when I read this (throwage) but it’s not because I hated it. No, I really did love this book. It was because it broke my heart. It was like the best third date and when it was getting close to being over and it was getting time to invite him in for coffee and he says that he doesn’t think it’s working, shakes my hand and walks away, leaving me dumbfounded at the door. That’s what Delirium was like for me. That’s what gets you thrown across the room.

Ella Enchanted

Although this had such a happy ending, having Charmont mad at Ella during the time in the book majorly broke my heart. How can such a perfect relationship not be perfect?

The Mortal Instruments

I’m sure Jace Whateverhesgoingbythesedays has broken my heart at some point. I mean, that is kind of what makes him sexy as all get out, but there was some definite heartbreaking involved in these books! Also I did get a little heartbroken over Alec and Magnus… They were my favorite and shouldn’t be let to break up.

New Moon

Haha, just kidding. Actually, I’m not. Although I’ve sort of lost my “ohmigoshthiseriesissofantastic” sense of this series, the scene after Edward left Bella did sort of tear me up. I don’t think I’ll ever feel the way I felt when I turned the page of the chapter that said “September” (or was it “October”… I dunno) and there was nothing.

BSC’s Goodbye Stacey, Goodbye

I wrote about my emotional breakdown over this book for last week’s Retro Reads Thursday. Seriously, this was heartbreaking!

Anna and the French Kiss

WHAT?! How did this make this list? You know the scene where Anna and St. Clair finally FINALLY kiss and his gf sees them and he gets up and chases after her and leaves Anna alone? Yeah… about that scene… heartbreaking!

Alright… now that my heart has been torn apart, I think I’ll do a little more damage and go see what books broke your heart!
