We’re kissin’ cousins ‘n that’s what makes it all right

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare

The Skinny: Now that Clary is immersed in the world of the Shadowhunters all she wants is her world to go back to normal. Instead, her mom is in a coma, her dad, who turns out to be Valentine (the series’ big bad), is still alive, and hotty mchotty Jace, who she is half in love with, turned out to be HER BROTHER! Downworlder children are being murdered and Valentine is the prime suspect; the question is why? But when the second Mortal Instrument is stolen Jace is accused of stealing it and imprisoned. Can Clary and the Shadowhunters stop Valentine and how can then when Jace is willing to give up everything he believes in to help his father?

BFF?: Clary gets better in this book and doesn’t lose any of the awesomeness she had in City of Bones. But the girl’s got some crazy shizz going on in her life and quite frankly I don’t know if my stress level can take having a friend with this many issues. It’s one thing to have an ex-demon fighter mom in a coma and a dad who’s the most evil being to ever come out of the Shadowhunters. But completely another to start dating your best friend but being in love with your newly discovered brother.

Readability: Clare’s excellent writing continues onto her second book and I found it just as fun and stimulating as the first. Still chock full of humor and wit, City of Ashes further explores the world of the Shadowhunters and introduces us to other parts of the Downworld. It’s a little darker than the first and presents obstacles that appear to be unovercomeable (yeah I made that word up).

Crush Level: 6
I still stick by Jace being yummy, despite finding out he’s Clary’s brother. And as weird as it may be I JUST WANT THEM TO GET TOGETHER! I just KNOW they aren’t really brother and sister.. but gah! <shakes fist in the air> They have the same dad! Although if Clary can’t be with him because he’s her brother that means he’s available for me… I could be okay with this.

Bonus Points:
Soap Opera Romance

Couldn’t you see this exact same scenario happening on a lame (or good) soap opera? Girl and Boy start to develop feelings, Girl finds out her dad is the local a-hole, Boy finds out his dad isn’t his real dad and that his dad is also local a-hole, Girl and Boy know it’s wrong but they still have feelings… I really felt I was in the middle of a soap opera and, like all soap operas, I only wanted more and more.

Gay Wizards

Magnus is still the coolest thing in this series, hands down.

Superlatives – Most Likely to Marry its Alabama Cousin
